Certificate of HE in Applied Language Studies
Things you need to know before you apply
ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/12
Members of the public may join a LEAP course as part of The University of Manchester's Certificate of Higher Education in Applied Language Studies.
The Certificate of HE in ALS will enable you to gain 20 University of Manchester credits for each LEAP language course you take. You may study up to a maximum of three different languages over the course of the programme, and up to three different courses per year. Once you achieve 120 credits, which will take from 2 to 6 years, you will be awarded a Certificate level HE qualification. Please note that students who register to study in the second semester are not eligible for the Cert of HE.
Our courses
Most of our courses are 23 weeks, September to May, with 3 hours of teaching a week. See here for course dates. The total cost of a 23-week course is £500, approximately £7.25/hour. This fee covers all in-class assessment, and, in the case of LEAP German, also covers the cost of the Goethe-Institut examination in May (levels A1-C1). We do not, however, provide course textbooks; they need to be bought separately from a bookseller of your choice.
Registration onto our 23-week courses entitles you to a student card for the academic year, which in turn gives you access to to resources available at the University Language Centre, John Rylands library and other leisure and sporting facilities across the University, as well as entitling you to various discounts in selective retail and food outlets around Manchester and beyond.
Please note, registration on shorter courses does not allow collection of a student card, but access to the University Language Centre will be available.
Payment
Payment can be made either as one single amount or in instalments. In the case of the latter, the fee due is divided equally into three instalments - one payment at registration, a second on 19th January and the final instalment on 19th April. For further information regarding payment, see item 7 (course fees) on our FAQs pages.
Enrolment
Enrolment begins on 15 August 2011. Some courses become full very quickly, so early enrolment is strongly advised. Enrolment is a two-stage process. First, complete an enrolment form (make sure you use the form for the Cert of HE in ALS on the application page) and send to Angela Aspden (email or post) . Once your place is confirmed, you will receive further information on how to complete registration, including payment. No enrolment is complete until payment is made.
Registration week
Applicants will have the chance to talk to us during Registration Week, Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd September 2011, 16:00 - 19:00, in room S3.3 (South Wing, third floor) in the Samuel Alexander building , no. 67 on the University's Campus Map. Note that you do not have to wait until Registration Week to enrol - on the contrary, if you wish to guarantee a place on the more popular courses, and you know which level you wish to enrol on, you are advised to register early. You may call in at one of the LEAP offices (LG8.2) during the stated office hours, or register by email/post from 15th August 2011.
Please note, in the case of LEAP German only, there are two Open Days set aside for assessments for those who are unsure of their entry level.

The figure of £7.25 per hour is arrived at as follows:
The student pays a total fee of £500, either in full or in three instalments. The course is 3 hours a week over 23 weeks = 69 hours; therefore £500 / 69 hours = £7.25/hr.
